How to Create Different Eyeliner Effects

How to Create Different Eyeliner Effects

If I had to choose only one kind of make-up in the world, it would have to be eyeliner. I’ve found that no matter how much eye make-up I put on my lids, or how much mascara on my lashes, nothing compares to a little cosmetic definition near the lash line. Perhaps this is because of my Asian eyes, or the fact that I don’t get nearly as much sleep as I should; hence the puffiness of my eyes at times. Here are some examples of how to create different eyeliner effects:

  1. Natural

For a natural, invisible eyeliner look, apply liner only to the outer half of your lash line. This is to help give your eyes a little definition without seeming too obvious. You shouldn’t apply all around the eyes because your lashes naturally look thicker towards the outer edges of the eyes, and it’s the lashes that create the definition to the eyes.

  1. Top Only

The title is self-explanatory; wearing eyeliner on only the top lid is a simple, understated look that is used by a lot of celebrities. A liquid liner would be best for this, especially if you’re going to do a winged tip. A pencil eyeliner is quite difficult to work with if you’re going for precision.

  1. Cat-eyes

Again, I’ve applied mine slightly thicker than usual because of my foldy (yup, made that up) lids.

Cat-eyes are widely popular amongst all types of people because it can look good on almost any eye shape. That’s because it can be modified to suit different faces. For example, Asians can benefit from thicker winged eyeliner to lift the eyes (like me!).

  1. Smokey

This look is more appropriate for night looks as it’s just too dark for daytime. Kohl eyeliner would be best for this. Kohl eyeliners are soft and very easy to smudge, which is why it’s commonly used in smokey eye looks. In this smokey eye eyeliner look, it’s all about blending and softening under the eyes. Personally, I looked like a panda the first few times I attempted this technique, so don’t be discouraged if you mess it up!

  1. Amy Winehouse

The late Amy Winehouse brought winged eyeliner to a whole new level. I would never apply this style of eyeliner everyday like she did, but it’s a perfect example of how you can use eyeliner as a trademark. You can always tone it down and establish a certain method of applying eyeliner and wear it consistently, so that people can identify you with that particular style.

  1. Katy Perry

Two things: false eyelashes and lots of eyeliner. Katy Perry always wears thick eyeliner and false eyelashes. She doesn’t usually wear any on her lower lashes, though. It’s either white eyeliner on the bottom or none at all. Her eyeliner look isn’t too different from our “Top Only” look, except it’s heavier. The darker line is also a product of wearing thick false eyelashes.

Products I used:

Bobbi Brown Long-wear Gel Eyeliner

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner

Prestige Kohl Eyeliner

Love this post! I haven’t yet mastered liquid eyeliner but that’s next on my to-learn list 🙂

I steer clear of the stuff when I’m in a hurry, though my Stila eyeliner makes it a lot easier to apply. Make me look better at it than I probably am 😉

Katy Perry is an eyeliner + falsies goddess. I don’t know how she pulls off all that product on her eyes, but she wears it well! Hope the tips helped, Jessica! 🙂

I agree with Jessica, Katy Perry’s look is definitely my favourite because it’s so understated but bold at the same time, which is pretty difficult to do, at times!!

I’m awful at applying liquid eyeliner, but I’m trying to master gel liner since I seem to find that one easier to manage!

I use gel liner more often for the same reason as you. I learned my lesson a few months back when I was trying to apply liquid liner in the car. Eek, never again!

I love doing a nice smokey eyeliner at night! and gel liner is the perfect product, everything else just creases and smudges all day.

It comes in handy when I need to do a quick smokey eye that won’t budge. Awesome staying power, but the downside is the slight dark stain gel liners sometimes leave on the skin 🙁
