NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Review
- Neither lipstick nor lip gloss—this is matte lip cream. A new kind of pout paint that goes on silky smooth and sets to a matte finish. Soft Matte Lip Cream is surprisingly durable and, unlike some matte lipstick formulas, also moisturizing. Available in 11 lip colors.

I’ve heard good and bad things about the Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream, so when I received it in the mail as a freebie with an order, I was really quite happy because I could finally give it a try. Unfortunately I may have held it to too high a standard as I really just got disappointed when I realized that it honestly wasn’t as good as I expected.
I got the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Istanbul, which is this really lovely cool pink that borders almost on purple. I honestly loved the shade as it looked pretty nice on me despite my warm undertones.
When swatched on skin, the lip cream is oddly glossy, which is a contradiction since it’s actually supposed to be a matte product. Still, when swiped on the lips, it is matte enough, but not the flat matte one might normally expect. It still has this subtle shine to it and I love it–it’s quite gorgeous. The problem with the finish is that it actually accentuates the dryness and flakiness of your lips. So if you want to use this product, you have to make sure to exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!
Another problem I found out with this product is that it’s really drying to the lips. After an hour or two of use, my lips already begin to chap. For a girl that’s prone to chapped lips like me, this spells bad news.
The consistency of this product is less than desirable as well. It looks opaque enough when swiped on the hand, but when I put it on my lips it takes a lot of coats before I get the desired opacity.
As you can see, it’s not quite matte, but it’s not quite glossy either. It’s a great finish, but the formula ruins it.
Anyway, another thing I noticed was that after a while, this lippie tends to rub off in patches…then when you go ahead and retouch, you can’t quite get it to apply evenly anymore.
