OPI It’s My Year Nail Lacquer Review
- A pink coloured nail polish with a touch of golden shimmer from OPI.
- Ethyl Acetate, Butyl Acetate, Nitrocellulose, Tosylamide Epoxy Resin, Acetyl Tributyl Citrate, Isopropyl Alcohol, Stearylkonium Bentonite, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Silica, Benzophenone 1, Trimethylpentanediyl Dibenzoate, Tin Oxide, CI 77891, CI 15880, CI 77510, CI 15850, CI 77120..
- Apply the polish to your nails in thin even coats, allowing to dry thoroughly between each one. To avoid smudging, apply nail polish to whichever hand you find the most difficult first, and then move on to the easier hand. The number of coats required depend on your taste. For a light, subtle look only one coat may be necessary. However, if you want a darker and more sparkly look, for night time perhaps, three coats may be more suitable.
- In the US, you can pick up a bottle from Amazon.com, whilst in the UK you can order it now from Lenawhite.co.uk.
What I was Expecting from OPI It’s My Year Nail Lacquer
I first tried OPI nail lacquers out of curiosity two years ago, when I picked up the Shrek Mini Collection cheap on Ebay, and since then I’ve also picked up the Nice Stems! Mini Collection, whilst my Mum had The Muppets one. However, I’d never tried a full-sized nail lacquer purely because they always seem to be quite pricey. I had quite high expectations for the full-sized ones purely because I had always felt that the brushes on the mini’s didn’t really do the polish justice, and I couldn’t have been more right, as confirmed when my Mum bought a full-size bottle on a P&O Ferry. As you can imagine, getting a taste of how amazing OPI nail polishes are, was enough to encourage me to buy one for myself when Lena White had a sale earlier in the year.
The Lena White website describes the colour as being “champagne-rose“, which sort of fits, but it really depends on the light that is shining on the nails, or even the bottle, as I learnt when trying to take photos of the product. Personally, I would describe this as a purple shade with a hint of pink, made absolutely unique and beautiful thanks to the addition of very fine gold glitter. However, the glitter is the main problem when it comes to trying to get a good shot of what the colour looks like.
I spent a long time stressing that the photos that I’d gotten weren’t really a great representation of the actual colour, however looking around the internet, I get the impression that virtually no blogger has figured out how to take a photo of this polish without glare or shine ruining the image. Even if you attempt to put the shade in the dark to prevent glare, the colour then looks too dark, and it really isn’t a dark colour.
In terms of colour is really is a unique colour, and I don’t think that I have ever come across a shade that quite compares to it. It’s a shade that always looks different but still looks so amazingly beautiful and it’s one that is almost guaranteed to draw in compliments.
Glitter, Glitter Everywhere
The glitter isn’t just a problem for trying to take photos, but even just applying the polish to your nails. In the bottle, the glitter has a tendency (as you might expect) to cling together, but the overall result seems to be different to other polishes in my experience. In the past, I’ve found that if you don’t shake up a glittery polish then you probably won’t get any glitter on your nails. However, OPI’s It’s My Year is the complete opposite, where it can seem like all you are applying is a layer of glitter, with little colour!
So, it really is important to make sure that you give the polish a really good shake.
But, this is a very glittery nail polish that sparkles beautifully and definitely isn’t to everyone’s tastes. However, despite the glitter, it’s not as in-your-face as you might expect, and it’s certainly not a colour that has to be restricted to only being worn on nights out, because it’s that sparkly. I personally think that it is weirdly discreet enough for daily wear, which is unusual for a glittery polish.
The polish applies really nicely, with a good sized brush that makes it easy to apply in the three recommended strokes. I like the fact that each layer of polish creates a very different type of look. For example, one thin layer of It’s My Year creates a very light, simple look in which the glitter and the purple appear to neutralise each other into a shade that is pale but not dominated by the glitter (assuming that you’ve shaken the bottle really well!). In comparison, three coats create a slightly darker shade that is brightened up by the glitter.
I definitely recommend three coats rather than two, because I’ve found that the colour is still quite patchy and transparent after two coats, whilst it is more opaque after three, and I feel that this is a much prettier colour.
I’m always impressed with the overall finish of OPI nail polishes, and It’s My Year is certainly no different. Firstly, the polish dries relatively quickly and I’ve never (yet) managed to smudge them, which is always a huge plus point. I also really like the way that the polish feels once it is dry. Many other nail polishes, especially those that are glitter-based tend to be quite rough to the touch. Nevertheless, It’s My Year is actually incredibly smooth, even without a top coat which is impressive.
I’ve also found that the polish seems to be really strong and resilient, meaning that it doesn’t tend to chip as much as the majority of other polishes and it genuinely lasts longer. I’m thankful to say that it certainly doesn’t peal off, which is a huge nail polish pet hate of mine.
I absolutely love this shade of polish; it is unique in colour, it applies really nicely and it looks fantastic. It is (or can be) quite an expensive polish, however I really do think that it is worth the extra cost, because OPI, in my opinion, offer the best overall finish that feels strong and actually has the longevity that it boasts about.
Don’t trust any images as an example of the colour, because this really is a shade that needs to be seen to be truly appreciated.
Anyone who is looking for a colour with a bit of sparkle, that is completely different to virtually any nail polish you are likely to have ever tried.
