Simple Skin Care Routine: 4 Steps

Any make-up artist knows that there is no make-up product that can substitute for having healthy, glowing skin. I used to buy tons and tons of make-up products before, but virtually no skin care products to accompany it. Looking back, I guess I took my skin for granted since I was still reaping the benefits of having “baby skin”.

I was the type to not wash make-up off after a night out. I only moisturized when I felt like it, and I had no sunscreen to speak of. I drank about 4 cups of black coffee a day with little to no water. Oh, and I only used to get about 4 hours of sleep. Sound familiar? Don’t make the same mistakes I did! Take care of your skin and prevent signs of aging with a simple skin care routine.

The CTMS Ritual:


Wash your face twice a day—once in the morning and once in the evening. I do this after taking off all my make-up with a water-based make-up remover. Cleansing refreshes the skin and washes off the dirt and bacteria that may have settled on your face.

Don’t wash your face too often. Why? When you cleanse your face more than you are supposed to, you strip your skin of its natural oils. This results in an overproduction of oil to compensate for it, causing breakouts, blemishes, all that ugly junk you don’t want.

Cetaphil is a widely recommended product that is mild enough for babies, and doubles as a cleanser and moisturizer. I sometimes use this in the evening as a moisturizer and cleanser if I run out of my Clinique liquid facial soap. In the mornings, I just use water to wash my face.


A toner helps bring your skin’s PH level back to normal. This is an essential part of your skin care routine because cleansing washes away the skin’s natural oils, leaving the skin dry and tight. Steer clear of toners with a high percentage of alcohol because it will just make your skin even drier.

Some cleansers and moisturizers already have toners incorporated in them to make the skin care process more convenient and less costly.

Dickinson’s Witch Hazel is my HG (Holy Grail) toner. I absolutely love it! It’s advertised as a “Pore Perfecting” toner that is gentle on all types of skin. I’ve been using this for months now, and I’ve noticed that the pores around my nose (which used to be massive I tell you) are no longer noticeable. The best part about this product is that it’s so incredibly cheap: around $6-8 for a 475ml bottle that will last you foreeeever. Before I discovered Dickinson’s Witch Hazel I used Cliniques clarifying lotion as my toner. I found it a bit drying, so I tried using other products, and I’m so glad I did!


Moisturizers protect and repair dry skin, creating an even base for your make-up. Some people use a sunscreen and moisturizer in one to lessen the amount of products applied on the skin. It’s tricky finding the right skin care regimen that is best for you skin because it has to assimilate with the other products as well. It’s such a disappointment to discover a new product, only to find out that it’s great as a standalone, but is absolutely horrible when used with your other skin care products.

I recommend Clinique’s gel hydratant moisturizing gel, especially for people with oily skin. This product is great for people of different skin types because of its gentle formula. I find it a bit expensive though, so I alternate between Cetaphil and this one. I enjoy using this in the summer when it’s hot and humid outside.


Sun Protection

Excessive sun exposure is the number one cause for skin cancer. I’m not one to bake for hours under the sun to get that perfect tan. I would much rather use a self-tanner, and I’m not ashamed to say it. Tanning beds are even riskier than tanning outdoors! Studies show that those who tan indoors are more likely to develop melanoma, the most deadly type of skin cancer, than people who tan outdoors. This is because tanning beds expose you to a more concentrated amount of UV radiation, causing brown spots, wrinkles and accelerated aging.

I use a special formula sunscreen that I get from my derma. You can do the same if you’re not too keen on using sunscreens currently available on the market, like me. As long as there’s light outside, put on some sunscreen, regardless if it’s a bright, sunny day, or an overcast, cloudy day.

Beware of sun protection products that do not do as they advertise. A higher SPF does not guarantee a higher level of protection from UV rays!
